Miyazaki is a prefecture in Japan that is 7735 square kilometers. It is located in southeast Kyushu area, and the eastern part faces the Pacific Ocean having a coastline. This area is called “Hyuganada”. The area from the northern part to the western part and the southern area are low uplands and it touches other prefectures such as Oita, Kumamoto, and Kagoshima.

As for the geographic info, 70% of the prefecture is a mountainous region, and the seasonal winds from the Japan Currant and other parts of Asia brings warm and humid weather. The rain from Mother Nature created numerous rivers within the mountains, letting us enjoy the vast and fertile alluvia fan and the beautiful coastline with a beach.

As Miyazaki has such beautiful nature, we have faith and respect towards the mountains and have cherished such culture. Cultures such as myths, cultural heritages, historical sites, and cultural resources were born all throughout the prefecture.

Because of this, Miyazaki is known as “Prefecture of Myths” for a long time.

One famous myth about the grandson of the sun goddess coming down to earth is called “Tenson Korin”. This story has been told mainly in the mountain areas in the northwestern part of Miyazaki, such as Takachiho, Hinokage, and Gokase. It was told in a traditional dance called “Yokagura” and it is performed by the local people who believe in the story. The dance has many variations depending on the area, but it has been cherished and handed on to the next generation for a long time.
From the upper land of Takachiho, there is a place where you can find a mystic view of the sea of clouds. It will surely remind you of the myths mentioned earlier. People say that they feel the God in this place. The northern area, which consists of the Gokase River and Nobeoka, has a lot of activities such as trekking. It also has a sawtooth coastline, and the seafood we can eat there is a blessing.

Miyazaki City, the capital of the prefecture, is located at the middle part. It is a resort area with gorgeous and simple characteristics and is sure to meet your needs. If you want to meet someone, there are a lot of entertainment spots. Also, Saito is a place with one of the most famous ancient tombs in Japan, letting you feel the ancient culture of Miyazaki. We are hoping to get it registered as a World Heritage too.

If you move on to the west, there are a few colonies inside the backbone of Kyushu Mountains. They are known as Shiiba and Nishimera. There, you can experience the modest and traditional culture of the people living in the mountain areas through their slash-and-burn cultivation and life with mountain forest resources. It also is a historical place where stories of Heike and the King of Kudara (a place in the Korean Peninsula) are still told.

In the Kirishima Area, there are places like Kirishima Geopark, Ebino (national park), Kobayashi, and Miyakonojo. Here, you can enjoy various food, spring water, and hot spring. This sure is a spot where you can enjoy nature. There is also a road called “Himuka Myth Road”, that runs from Takaharucho, the center of this area, and all the way to Takachiho, which was mentioned earlier. You can learn about myths and how we have passed them to the next generation. Just as much as you can feel the spiritual aspects, you can also feel the warm humanity.

The southern area allures you to a beautiful and exciting view with changes. A route called “the lovers’ road” runs through the coastline right near the mountains and leads you to the south end of Miyazaki, Tooi Cape. The Kushima Area that leads to Oosumi Peninsula has many popular agriculture products like sweet potato called Kansho. In the area called Nichinan Obi, you can taste great and fresh food from the sea. Also, you may be interested in the way they combine the old castletown and the modern city together.

Miyazaki, just like other places in Japan, is a place where public transportation is not yet common and widely used. Most local people move by car.

Access to sightseeing spots is not convenient either. Renting a car may be a good idea with its speed, but you might miss the wonderful view and the communication with local people.

Why not travel a part of this prefecture with a bicycle?
Not throughout the whole trip but a part of it; train and bicycle, bus and bicycle, car and bicycle, foot and bicycle… combinations like these may help you meet something exciting.
Why not use the pedals and start moving slowly?
The warm sunlight and thoughtful people are waiting you.
Here, Miyazaki, a place of sunshine, is a paradise for you and bicycles.
